The 2005 Rumble wasn't the first time that the final two superstars in the match were eliminated at the same time. It initially happened in 1994, and that time, a different precedent was set for handling the confusion.

In 1994, both Bret Hart and Lex Luger were chasing WWE Champion Yokozuna - Bret had lost the title to Yokozuna at WrestleMania IX, while Luger had beaten the behemoth at SummerSlam by countout, failing to win the title. That made them both favorites to win the Rumble, and they both got good draws - Luger came in at 23, while Bret came in at 27 (though he was hampered by having competed - and having been attacked by Owen Hart - earlier in the evening).

Both men were focused on winning and gaining absolution (along with a WrestleMania title shot), but who would be the first to blink? Neither, it turned out. Luger and Hart were the final two men in the Royal Rumble, and as fans wondered which hero would pick up the win, they both tumbled out of the ring simultaneously (Luger was holding Hart as he fell over the ropes).

The fans had no idea how the situation would be handled, but WWE President Jack Tunney had it under control, declaring that for the first (and only) time, the Royal Rumble match had two co-winners. It was ultimately decided that Luger and Hart would both get shots at WrestleMania, with Luger's coming first and Hart's coming second.
