Stone Cold Steve Austin walking out on the WWE in June 2002, after reaching a breaking point with creative when he learnt he was booked to lose to ‘The Next Big Thing’ Brock Lesnar in a match on Raw without any build or hype, had some major ramifications for the Rattlesnake when he returned to the company the following year.

Before agreeing to let Austin come back, Vince McMahon felt like Austin was in debt to the company for quitting without notice or warning. Austin was advertised for numerous house shows and events after all prior to quitting. So Vince slapped his biggest star Austin with the biggest fine in company history, ordering him to pay $650,000.

This couldn’t have gone down well with Austin, who had racked up some legal costs since leaving WWE for being arrested for domestic abuse and divorcing Debra Marshall.

Thankfully Austin was able to talk Vince down to only paying a third of that with $250,000 and all was forgiven, with Austin retiring at WrestleMania XIX and transitioning to GM and Sheriff roles on Raw afterwards.
