Yeah, ALWAYS going to be a problem in wrestling, always has been, always will. Whether its a clash of personalities, bruised egos or jealous spot guarding, there will always be backstage issues in wrestling. The reason it made this particular list is that in todays wrestling world, where only one truly major league product rules the day, backstage BS is truly more dangerous than ever. In the days of the territories, many (but not all, of course) ego problems and/or political struggles could be resolved simply by leaving for another territory and plying ones trade elsewhere, but in todays WWE, one wrong move can mean career suicide. Of course, it is tempting to attribute every failed push to the cutthroat politics inherent to pro wrestling (indeed, many unmarketable wrestlers are only too keen to blame anybody but themselves for the fact that they never got over in a major company). However, the sad truth is that a lot of promising careers have been scuppered by backstage nonsense and it is a trend that is getting worse today because of the lack of big money opportunities outside of the WWE.
I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction.
I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long!
If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it).
I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work.
Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that!
Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?)
Latcho Drom,
