10 Most Hated Wrestling Matches Involving Beloved Wrestlers
3. Booker T Vs. Jeff Jarrett (WCW Nitro - 2 December 2000)
If one match best encapsulates the downfall of WCW, this is it. The San Francisco 49ers Match was a comedy pole bout to decide the new WCW World Heavyweight champion. Four wooden boxes were loosely strung over each ring corner: three contained weapons, the other the belt.
Hopes of a serious World Championship contest were dashed completely when Jarrett smashed the first box revealing an inflatable sex doll. The next two weapon boxes contained a framed picture of Scott Hall, which was at least used as a weapon, and a coal miner’s glove, an antiquated and twee sounding weapon befitting the striking hand of a Dickensian villain.
Winning the match became ridiculously easy, but both men did almost anything than grab the final box. When Jarrett finally tried, Beetlejuice, a little person linked to Howard Stern, hit repeated low blows, allowing Booker to seize the box, even if the championship fell out and was retrieved by the timekeeper.
With the insane match stipulation, its juvenile humour, and the booking of the bout, it is doubtful any wrestler would be able to get over. Post-WCW, Booker T thrived with an almost clean slate, becoming one of WWE’s most beloved legends.
