6. The Road Warriors

The Road Warriors encapsulated the good and the bad of metal, the brash confidence and the crippling neurosis. Much like metal, Hawk and Animal were no-nonsense in their brutality, a force of nature looking to sweep all before them and not afraid to break some bones along the way. A Road Warriors match was as brutal as mainstream professional wrestling got at the time, a whirling circle-pit of violence that featured no give and a whole lot of smashing.

But look deeper, and there is more to this than originally assumed. The Road Warriors are forever described as no-nonsense equal opportunity purveyors of violence, but there sure was a lot of pageantry around these bruisers, wasn't there? The face paint, the shoulder pads, the grand entrances. Underneath the confident savagery was insecurity and a need to be taken seriously. Metal fans will know full well how that translates into music.

The Road Warriors brought ferocity into the mainstream, becoming the most popular tag team in wrestling history through a mixture of aggression and undeniably cool visuals. The parallels with metal music are clear for all to see, even without delving into the 100mph lifestyles.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
