No Way Out 2004’s main event gave us a classic moment, but it was far from a classic match. Eddie Guerrero’s WWE Championship victory was immensely cathartic, and the culmination of a long, arduous battle against his personal demons. It was hard to not feel elated for Eddie as he celebrated with the title belt in one hand and the Mexican flag in the other, but his win greatly overshadows what was a sloppily booked contest.

Eddie and Brock Lesnar told a solid David vs. Goliath story, with Brock tossing Guerrero around with relative ease throughout. Eddie slowly chipped away at the monster’s legs as things progressed, and while this is solid psychology in theory, Lesnar’s selling was spotty at best. Furthermore, the conclusion was spoiled by a needless Goldberg interference and referee bump that played to Eddie’s opportunistic character, but detracted from the story as a whole.

Brock vs. Eddie is a very good match, but not a great one. Few title wins have ever been celebrated as passionately as Guerrero’s, but an iconic moment doesn’t always make for an iconic match, and this bout is a perfect example of that.
