10 Most Prestigious Wrestling Championship Belts Ever

3. The WWF/E Championship

Date established: 25 April, 1963 # Of Reigns: 119 Wrestler with Most Reigns: John Cena (12) Longest Reign: Bruno Sammartino (2,803 Days) Shortest Reign: Andre the Giant (~30 seconds) This was a difficult entry to list. On one hand, WWE is the biggest wrestling promotion in the world, with its Superstars reaching an international audience, and the WWE Championship has a rich history that includes many, many legendary matches and multi-year title reigns. These include Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, Pedro Morales, as well as many reigns well over 200 days. On the other hand, the WWE Championship was considered a €˜prop€™ at one point, changing hands so frequently and sometimes with so little explanation or justification that holding it really didn€™t mean as much. This was especially clear in 1999 when 11 reigns, including one by Vince McMahon, took place in that year alone devaluing the Championship by making its holders look weak and the Champion so interchangeable. This second point became especially important in recent years, as more fans begin to think that the Champion isn€™t the best wrestler, but instead the biggest merchandise seller. That€™s not a mentality that would fly in any other promotion; in most other wrestling companies, the Champion is the best wrestler, period. When more cynical wrestling fans look at WWE€™s John Cena as his 12 reigns as WWE Champion, many people see nothing more than a guy who can wrestle well on the odd occasion, but whose main purpose is to sell merchandise instead of his opponent€™s moves. Nevertheless, the belt has been the focal point for many historic moments in wrestling history, and many big title matches, especially at WrestleMania, have entertained fans the world over. So while it does have a rich history, its questionable presentation at times prevents this belt from being ranked at the top of this list.
