Despite his years with the company and immense talents, Kofi Kingston was generally viewed as one of those veterans who would retire without holding a world championship. The fan admiration for him was there, but it seemed like his chances at main event stardom died with Randy Orton in 2009.

During a gauntlet match on Smackdown where he replaced the injured Mustafa Ali, Kingston proved his skills as a babyface, getting immense reactions from the fans as they rooted for him to overcome the odds. This lead to the most momentum he'd ever received as a singles star, getting massive reactions in the Men's Elimination Chamber match, and being booked to face WWE champion Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35.

The match was an instant classic, the best singles match at WrestleMania in almost a decade. Bryan showed off why he's the best wrestler in the world, and Kofi put on the triumphant performance of his career. Despite all odds against him, Kofi hit Bryan with Trouble in Paradise and pinned the 'Planet's Champion' clean, becoming the first African born WWE champion in history. The euphoria from the crowd and the crying Xavier Woods still sends shivers down the spine, as Kofi finally proved what he was capable of.
