Ricky Steamboat had just defeated Randy Savage for the WWE Intercontinental Championship in an instant classic at WrestleMania III. Steamboat’s performance had many fans thinking it would be a long time before he would lose the belt. Just a few months later, a very unlikely scenario would play out.

In summer 1987, a title defense against The Honky Tonk Man on Superstars of Wrestling had few fans thinking Steamboat's reign was about to end. However, the Elvis impersonator not only upset Steamboat to win the belt but would go on to have the longest WWE Intercontinental Championship reign in history. The 454 day reign is a record that still stands today. It was finally ended in explosive fashion by The Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam '88.
