Ricky Steamboat had just defeated Randy Savage for the WWE Intercontinental Championship in an instant classic at WrestleMania III. Steamboat’s performance had many fans thinking it would be a long time before he would lose the belt. Just a few months later, a very unlikely scenario would play out.
In summer 1987, a title defense against The Honky Tonk Man on Superstars of Wrestling had few fans thinking Steamboat's reign was about to end. The 454 day reign is a record that still stands today. It was finally ended in explosive fashion by The Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam '88.
