In 2006, the Mr. McMahon character was embroiled in an on-screen feud with Shawn Michaels, which led to a bloody and brutal No Holds Barred match at WrestleMania 22 (which would later go on to be voted Match of the Year by the readers of Pro Wrestling Illustrated).

Heading into Backlash 2006, something needed to happen in order to keep the feud hot and relevant, and that came in the form of a little bit of blasphemy.

It's public knowledge that since his return to WWE in 2002, Shawn Michaels had cleaned up his life and found peace as a born again Christian. Vince McMahon utilsed this knowledge, and decide to make a tag-team match for Backlash. Vince and Shane McMahon vs Shawn Michaels and his tag team partner, God.

The match is essentially a handicap match, but the real controversy comes in the preamble to the match where Vince McMahon announces God to the ring, who appears via a spotlight and is forced to enter to the infamous Somebody Call My Momma. 

Many were surprised that Shawn Michaels would go along with what essentially amounted to a mockery of his religion, but he remains a professional throughout what is one of the oddest matches in WWE history.
