6. Kicking The Leg Out

Royal Rumble 1994 saw a family dispute violently explode when a furious and frustrated Owen Hart assaulted his older brother Bret. Owen had spent years living in the long shadow of his more successful brother. Widely regarded as the superior of the two, Bret was already a former world champion and it only seemed a matter of time before he regained the gold.

The brothers lost their tag titles to The Quebecers that evening with Bret falling under the weight of a severe knee injury. Owen’s frustrations came to a head, believing Bret’s hubris and lack of faith in his brother had cost them the gold. With several months of onscreen build and years of off screen tension heavily implied, Owen finally snapped and turned heel. He floored his injured brother with a stiff kick to the injured knee. Venting his frustrations, Owen’s mic time would lead to one of the most (in)famous promo botches ever: “And that’s why I kicked your leg out of your leg!”

Regardless, the betrayal was a dramatic and well developed one that led to one of the greatest opening matches in WrestleMania history later that year.
