10 Most Underrated Gimmicks Of WWE's New Generation Era

1. Waylon Mercy

Dan Spivey never really took off in the WWE, which is a shame, because he had one of the best gimmicks ever crafted. It just happened to have been birthed at the exact wrong time. Waylon Mercy was based on Robert De Niro's character, Max Cady, in Martin Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear. The jet-black hair, all white attire (except for a colorful Hawaiian shirt), and sinister-looking tattoos all gave Mercy an incredibly unique look that made him stand out on the roster. But it was his demeanor that really set him apart. A series of vignettes introduced him as Southern gentleman type, soft spoken, but with a little something "off" about him. He fancied himself to be God-like, saying things like "Lives are gonna be in Waylon Mercy's hands, you know what I mean?". And once he got in the ring, the peaceful facade was stripped away, revealing a sociopath who would use any means necessary to get the win, choking and stomping and biting, if he had to (picture Ric Flair as a Southern-fried lunatic). If this all sounds a little too familiar, it should be noted that Dan Spivey helped come up with the Bray Wyatt character as well, which shares many similarities with Mercy and is currently enjoying a much better run, proving that Waylon Mercy was simply a character ahead of his time.
