10 Most Unlikely Main Event Acts In WWE History

8. Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens’ success in WWE owes as much to the company’s change in priorities as his incredible skill as a performer. Even a few short years ago, KO’s ascent to the main event would have been completely unthinkable. He has always been a tremendous wrestler, but his portly frame and scruffy image are completely at odds with WWE’s old image of what the ideal headliner looks like, and thus, he’d have likely been doomed to a career on the midcard.

Image still plays a role in determining a wrestler’s push (see: Jinder Mahal), but it’s nowhere near as important as it used to be. WWE has become much less regressive in that regard, and now, a wrestler can make it to the top primarily on the strength of their performances - provided their character work is up to scratch.

Fortunately, Owens is a standout in that department. Sharp-witted and with an impeccable grasp of his character, he’s one of the most charismatic superstars WWE has had in years. He is, frankly, too good to be denied, and just like Daniel Bryan and Mick Foley before him, his success will hopefully open the door for more performers of his ilk to follow his path.
