10 Most Unlikely Main Event Acts In WWE History
3. Jinder Mahal
Jinder Mahal’s sudden ascent to WWE Championship content on SmackDown was shocking, but the reasoning behind it is pretty clear. WWE have identified India as an emerging market, and feel it’s important to push a (sort of) native star as they expand into the country. Likewise, Mahal is thought to be an incredibly hard worker behind the scenes, and if his new physique is the product of hard graft, it’s easy to see why the company have been impressed by him.
All that said, Jinder’s push came as the worst kind of surprise. Having done nothing but job since returning to WWE last year, Mahal has absolutely no momentum even less credibility. Prior to last week, Jinder hadn’t won a Raw or SmackDown singles match since defeating the lowly Jack Swagger last September, yet fans will now be expected to believe he’s someone who can pose a legitimate threat to Randy Orton.
It’s an absurd situation, and the first time WWE have ever thrust an enhancement into the spotlight so recklessly. It will inevitably blow up in their face, and when it does, they’ll be faced with the intimidating prospect of completely rebuilding SmackDown’s crumbling main event scene.
