10 NJPW Matches To Watch Before AEW Forbidden Door
6. Hiromu Takahashi Vs El Desperado - Best Of The Super Juniors Final 2022
The Best of the Super Juniors tournament is NJPW's annual cruiserweight tournament, with the winner earning a shot at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at Dominion. If the champion wins the tournament, then he chooses his opponent at the event.
Every year, the best in NJPW's junior division take to the ring to put on some of the best matches of the year. This year's tournament also featured competitors from outside NJPW for the first time since the pandemic, including Impact's X Division Champion Ace Austin and CMLL's Titan among others, as well as AEW's Wheeler Yuta. In the end, A Block winner Hiromu Takahashi faced B Block winner El Desperado in the final at Nippon Budokan.
Hiromu entered the final as a three-time BOSJ winner, looking to be the first man to win the tournament four times, and the first to win three in a row. El Desperado reached his second final, having lost an incredible match to Hiromu in the 2020 final. The story of the match adds to the stakes. Hiromu suffered a storyline knee injury during the tournament and Desperado tried to capitalise with his submission finisher, Numero Dos.
Tuning into any of the tournament shows would be a great way to familiarise yourself with the junior heavyweight division, but this match is a great place to start.
