In 2018, Bullet Club was imploding. Cody Rhodes challenged Kenny Omega's leadership, and went after Omega's former tag-team partner and long-time friend Kota Ibushi. After losing to Ibushi at Wrestle Kingdom 12, Cody attacked him the next night, being stopped by Omega. Ibushi returned the favour when Cody attacked Kenny at The New Beginning in Sapporo, and the Golden☆Lovers reunited.

After Omega lost his IWGP US Heavyweight Championship to Jay White, an argument within the Elite erupted, with Kenny inadvertently shoving Matt Jackson to the ground. This would lead to the Young Bucks challenging the Lovers to a match at Strong Style Evolved in Long Beach, California. The match, of course, is full of excellent in-ring work and jaw dropping spots. But the heart of this match is the storytelling from all four men. The hesitancy to inflict severe punishment on each other, Matt Jackson's back injury, the bonds that these men have formed over the years shattering in front of their eyes and at their own hands. It truly is a masterpiece in all aspects.

After this match, the four men were able to put aside their differences. Kenny Omega won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Dominion with Ibushi in his corner. In following the celebration, Kenny ignored the title in favour of embracing Matt Jackson and The Golden☆Elite was formed.
