10 Most Notorious Shawn Michaels Urban Legends

9. The Rock Refused To Work With Him

Story: It's one of the best "dream matches" that never happened: Shawn Michaels vs. The Rock. Shawn was a top guy when The Rock started in late 1996. In 1997, The Rock was an ascending star. There were stories that came out saying that Michaels (along with his buddy Triple H) didn't want The Rock to be a big star and tried to sabotage him. Because of that, The Rock had an issue with them. Michaels suffered a major back injury in 1998, was out for four years and when he came back, The Rock wasn't a full timer anymore although they were separately in the two biggest matches at SummerSlam 2002. If he never suffered that injury maybe they would have feuded. We just don't know. Here's how Michaels explained it on the Jim Ross podcast a few months ago: "I can remember many, many years ago, as I came back, Pat Patterson asked about that (working with The Rock) and I said, 'Sure, whoever you want.' But he wasn't interested, and that was it. But I liked anybody that I hadn't been in the ring with." Shawn came back to WWE in 2002. The Rock was around for the most part until just after WrestleMania 19 in 2003 and then did one more match at WrestleMania 20 in 2004, which is when he left for about seven years without wrestling. The Rock's opinion may have changed, though. When The Rock inducted his dad & grandpa into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008, he specifically said he always wanted to wrestle Shawn Michaels. He also mentioned John Cena and Rey Mysterio in that speech. Why People Believe It: They never had a match and Shawn had a rep for being a jerk, so it does make sense. Should We Believe It: Yes. Things appear to be better now since they have been photographed together and things like that. Once again, people's opinions changed over time especially about Michaels. Plus, Rock worked a lot with Triple H so he probably would have worked with Michaels too.
