5. WWE Are Legally Barred From Promoting The Gimmick In Memphis
It's unclear whether or not this ruling still stands, and - let's be honest - it's hard to believe that it does, but there was a time period when Vince McMahon's juggernaut were pretty much banned from promoting the King Of The Ring and the offshoot 'King' gimmick in Memphis, Tennessee. This all stems from the time when Harley Race was using the crown, cape and scepter, working as a snooty, royal heel. Longtime WWE announcer and Hall Of Fame inductee, Jerry 'The King' Lawler wasn't quite working for his future employer just yet, and was infuriated by the promotion for one WWF house show in the mid-to-late-80's. Advertising that 'The King' was set to be in town, Lawler argued in court that McMahon was intentionally misleading fans into believing that he was booked for the show. The judge ruled in Lawler's favour, meaning fans in Memphis would never see the King Of The Ring come to town. What a truly bizarre situation, one which just shows the sway Jerry Lawler held in his home base of Memphis.
