10 Obscure WWE SummerSlam Facts You Didn't Know

2. The WWE Title Takes A Backseat

It may seem surprising, but the WWE's crown jewel, the WWE title, has only main evented half of the Summerslam events going in to 2014. Summerslam, much like WrestleMania, is often heavy on dream matches, sometimes taking the main stage and the focus off of the WWE title. Matches such as Shawn Michaels vs. Hulk Hogan, Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar, and even The Undertaker vs. The Undertaker have all main evented Summerslam over the WWE title defense. Tag team matches have also been featured heavily in the past, particularly within the first few years of Summerslam. Hulk Hogan teaming with the likes of Randy Savage, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake and the Ultimate Warrior all took center stage. In 2010, an unconventional 7-on-7 tag team match was the main tilt, as the WWE stars took on NXT rookies. The WCW and World Heavyweight title are also responsible for the WWE Title being pushed back a bit, as the championship rose to prominence within the WWE after the purchase of WCW. Four times, the annual summer event was main evented by a WCW or World Heavyweight Title match as opposed to the WWE's signature strap.
