Selling might be one of the most, if not the single most, underrated aspects of the professional wrestling art form. In todays WWE product, selling seems to by and large have been relegated to a position of very low importance, as the McMahon Empire focuses on making their performers murder incomprehensible promos, and/or adopt gimmicks that alienate them from their shrinking fan base. Oddly enough this attitude is present despite the fact that one of the reasons Dolph Ziggler is so over with the fan base is because he is simply the best seller in the entire organisation. Never is the value of selling clearer than when a move is sold poorly or oversold. Overselling (whether it be accidental or intentional) normally forces the viewer into a double take and a laugh of disbelief. An oversell is a shattering of kayfabe, and overselling can draw the viewer out of the moment in an instant, and kill a match immediately. But in saying that, when something is oversold its more often than not pretty funny too. And considering that Vince McMahon probably has the worst sense of humour imaginable (while thinking he is funnier than Louis CK) overselling can normally at least give viewers a bit of a laugh in the middle of the show, that is no doubt trying to be intentionally funny at times and is failing.
