Although the feud started out as a clash between two of the best wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots, it soon shifted to Crhis Jericho targeting CM Punk's family. He made many derogatory comments regarding Punk's alcoholic father and "drugged up" sister, and even after coming up short at 'Maina, he continued to talk trash about Punk's family roots. Meanwhile, Y2J got the better of him at every turn, adding insult to injury by pouring beer on him while he was out cold in the middle of the ring. It was a dark path for Jericho to take, but it only fueled the anger of Punk and the fans who wanted to see the former nine time Intercontinental champion get his. Sure, taking home the WWE Championship was an added bonus, but the real focus was on Punk exacting his revenge. Not only was Jericho playing off Punk's straightedge lifestyle creative and unprecedented, it was also shades of when Stone Cold Steve Austin drenched the ring and his opponents with beer during the Attitude Era. Aside from being excellent technical wrestlers, Punk and Jericho had a lot of common: they were both the biggest stars of their respective generation next to Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and John Cena in addition to being the best heels of their time. It would have been the equivalent to a feud between Mankind and Jericho back in the Attitude Era but on a much larger scale. Their ability to keep the program enthralling and captivating was Attitude Era-esque in that there was never a point that their heat cooled off. The feud was the perfect mix of two phenomenal workers and a solid story to work with. They knocked it out of the park that spring, having an exceptional outing at the Extreme Rules event in Chicago. If only we could get more of these kind of rivalries nowadays.
