It's impossible to overstate just how poorly the merging of WCW and WWE went in 2001. The entire angle pretty much disintegrated within half a year's time, with the only real payoff coming in the form of a gigantic stroke to Vince McMahon's ego. He'd bought and buried his former rival, and the fans were strung along for the ride as witnesses to his supremacy.

Any fans of WCW hoping to see their guys compete against new adversaries in creative story arcs were irritated to find Vince was using this as an opportunity to bury just about everyone who'd come onboard. Tuning in during The Invasion storyline was like watching a nightly execution.

His blatant disregard for anyone with a WCW contract, coupled with the lack of the company's biggest names - like Sting, Goldberg, the nWo, Rey Mysterio, and Ric Flair - turned the whole storyline into a slaughter of the WCW brand.

There's no bigger "What Could Have Been" moment in the last two decades of professional wrestling than The Invasion - and the quickest way to get two diehard wrestling fans into a heated discussion is to throw those words out there and listen as they hypothesize how the angle should have went down.

Quite frankly, my blood's started to get hot just writing about it.
