The Cruiserweight Classic was a roaring success last year. Sure, the follow-up was disappointing, but the CWC produced some of WWE’s best matches of 2016, regularly sat near the top of the Network’s most-watched shows while it was being aired, and introduced WWE audiences to a slew of world-class athletes like Kota Ibushi, Akira Tozawa, and Gran Metalik.

WWE’s next big tournament will revolve around the United Kingdom Championship in January, but all signs point towards a Women’s Classic later in the year. WWE have already tried-out several dozen women ahead of the new year, and with independent stars Kimber Lee, Heidi Lovelace, and Evie set to join the Performance Center in January, the wheels are already in motion.

Assuming WWE can sign-up 32 competitors of the same calibre as the CWC’s field, the Women’s Classic can’t fail. The aforementioned trio are tremendous wrestlers, and when you through names like Candice LeRae, Nixon Newell, and Joshi sensation Io Shirai into the mix, WWE could have a stacked talent pool on their hands. There’s no reason to believe it wouldn’t be every bit as successful as the CWC, especially after women’s wrestling’s spike in popularity in 2016.
