10 Problems WWE Has With Modern WrestleManias
7. Pointless, Meandering Skits
While longer runtimes have allowed WWE to fit more of its Superstars on more recent WrestleMania cards, it has also seen an increase in worthless, time-wasting skits and adverts.
It’s understandable that WWE wants
to rake in advertising revenue, but when you’ve already had to sit through
adverts on the WWE Network itself,
several Flo Rida performances, and at least one awkward scene involving the
Golden Truth, it becomes all the more unbearable to watch Dolph Ziggler and The
Miz dressing up as Colonel Sanders and a chicken in order to sell KFC. While that particular display might have occurred at Summerslam last year, it's not unreasonable to think that WrestleMania will receive the same treatment this time around, particularly given Enzo and Cass's recent finger lickin' excursions.
Both fans in attendance and viewers at home tend to become more and more irritable the longer an event drones on, and this isn’t helped by the constant product placement, unnecessary tangents, and unwanted diversions. If WrestleMania absolutely has to be seven hours long, then wouldn’t it be better to fill that time with wrestling, the thing people have actually paid to watch in the first place?
The occasional bit of filler can work well to break things up, but only if it's entertaining and serves a purpose other than to satisfy sponsors and shareholders. The three way show of respect between Stone Cold, Hulk Hogan and The Rock was a great example of this, a nostalgic and heartfelt moment that didn't step on any other wrestlers - but still felt like it belonged on the show.
