10 Reasons For Wrestling Fans To Be Excited About July
The wrestling events to keep an eye out for going into the summer months.
The summer months are packed full of marquee wrestling events. WWE, New Japan and independents all over the world hold some of their biggest shows in July and August, making it a damn good time to be a wrestling fan.
WWE try to ramp up excitement for their second biggest show of the year, while New Japan begin their most prestigious annual tournament. The summer holidays makes everyone more open to entertainment, and pro wrestling promotions gladly fill that void. Indie promotions like Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, RevPro and WCPW all give us their best product. With that in mind, if you find yourself with more free time over the holiday period, get down to your local indie. Plus, you can stay up to ludicrous hours to catch streams from all over the globe.
If your viewing experience hasn't widened beyond the WWE Network, and the two brand-specific PPVs aren't enough to tide you over until SummerSlam, look through this list for some wrestling events that you might not be aware of. July is wall-to-wall wrestling, and if you're a die-hard fan, you won't want to miss out on any of it.
10. Cena's Return
John Cena hasn't been active on WWE programming since WrestleMania 33. He has taken time away to fulfil Hollywood obligations, as well as spend time with his new fiancee Nikki Bella.
Cena has confirmed himself that he will be back on the July 4th edition of SmackDown, sure to bring some patriotic American flair to a brand currently under Maharaja rule. Cena is the antithesis to Jinder Mahal's foreign heel gimmick, so an interaction between these two on July 4th is inevitable.
What is not set in stone however, is Cena's long-term plans within the company. Coming off a rather pitiful 13th WWE Championship reign, Cena played a hand in disrupting SmackDown Live's main event which had flourished under AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose. Will he be sticking around to try and help Jinder Mahal build a significant title reign, or will WWE give up the experiment and put Cena back on top?
Then there is his supposed 'free agent' status. WWE have essentially crafted themselves a loophole where they can airship Cena into Monday Night Raw in an effort to boost ratings. Or, they can have him play out whatever role he might have on SDL.
Either way, the intrigue surrounding Cena's return makes it an unmissable event.
