10 Reasons The WWE Title Is Meaningless In 2017
2. Face Of America
After joining SmackDown Live! in the 'Superstar Shake-up' with a tweaked image, Kevin Owens ramped up the patriotism in week two of his 'Face of America' campaign. Slapping his sneering mug across the entire staging area, he then took down local jobber Gary Gandy as part of his megalomaniacal new open challenge.
The pro-Canadian anti-American rhetoric is well-worn schtick, but the latest twist on the trope almost guarantees the United States title's presence in some of the best action each week.
Starting as they mean to go on, the blue brand promoted a main event match just to become the number one contender for the title on 'KO's first night on the show. Won by bonafide headliner AJ Styles, the potential Owens/Styles meeting already has most fans salivating and positions their scrap comfortably above the Randy Orton/Jinder Mahal encounter that will anchor the Backlash pay-per-view in May.
For now and the foreseeable future, the WWE Title has already been forced into an unwelcome slot as a secondary title at best thanks to the Monday night equivalent current stowed away somewhere in Brock Lesnar's farmhouse. It will only be diminished further should Owens continue with his refreshed approach.
