10 Reasons Why Terry Funk Is The Funking Man

7. He Doesn€™t Need To Still Be Wrestling...But He Does It Anyway...

WWE.comWWE.comThroughout his amazing career, Terry Funk has been in the ring with the very best. His list of opponents reads like a veritable €˜who€™s who€™ of wrestling€™s glorious past (and even its trailblazing present). He€™s done it all, of course, but the main reason that he keeps coming back is that he enjoys it. The guy just loves wrestling and wrestling, apparently, loves him. Terry Funk has made his money in professional wrestling. As a shrewd political operator in the NWA€™s last days, he could ensure that his services netted him the best deals. On the indy circuit, he is usually the best paid guy on the card (which is, in my opinion, exactly as it should be). Of course, he has made numerous attempts at retirement (he was talking about it as early as the 1970€™s) but he always comes back, purely and simply because he loves what he does. In fact, the only thing that Funk loves more than wrestling is his family. Watching him cry during his daughter€™s wedding in the (definitive) wrestling movie Beyond the Mat just highlights what a dedicated family man he really is. Even as he recounts p*ssing in his daughter€™s boyfriend€™s gas-tank many years earlier, Funk€™s love for his family shines through... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytmi0u6fbw4 Terry Funk stands as an example of what can be achieved by forging your own path and doing what you love. There has been pain (and no small amount of anguish) along his path, for sure, but nothing is worth obtaining without sacrifice. Funk has also done a fair bit of acting and has earned good money from his TV and film work. So he really doesn€™t need wrestling, but wrestling obviously needs him. Then again, there€™s also my personal favourite non-wrestling Funker moment, THAT car dealership commercial (which can be partly seen in Beyond the Mat)... Say it with me now... €œTERRY FUNK, WITH A MESSAGE FOR WOMEN...€ Yup. If this rasslin€™ thing doesn€™t pan out, The Funker could be a used car dealer (although, if he was to pursue that line of work, operating out of a place called €˜The Double Cross Ranch€™ probably wouldn€™t be the best idea). ...In fact, that commercial might be the reason he keeps coming back to the ring to participate in dangerous matches; he might be trying to induce partial amnesia...

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
