10 Recently Revealed WWE Ideas That Were Pitched And Went Nowhere
1. Bubba Ray Dudley Crushes The Rock’s Throat
Bubba Ray Dudley has gone on record saying he once pitched crushing The Rock’s throat to Vince McMahon – with the boss liking it. It started when Bubba Ray Dudley on his SiriusXM Busted Open show talked about what The Young Bucks could do to get over more in AEW, suggesting a tag team break their legs in storyline so they couldn’t have Superkick Parties. The feeling being the audience would then anticipate their return to seek vengeance.
Turns out Bubba had a similar idea for The Rock back in the day. He shared how “a long time ago, I pitched an idea to Vince McMahon about me & D-Von crushing The Rock’s throat so Rock couldn’t talk anymore. I wanted to take away The People’s voice from The People. Obviously, it never happened, but Vince said that he really liked the idea.”
Fans would have feverishly anticipated Rock regaining the ability to speak again, wanting him to deliver his signature catchphrases. It makes sense, Rock is the best talker the business has ever seen – the heat for taking his voice away would have been huge. Bubba Ray said that the boss liked the idea but WWE officials never let it happen, believing they turned it down because The Rock and his audience banter used to attract a lot of fans and crowds to arenas.
Bubba also recently revealed on The Chris Van Vliet Show that he pitched his Bully Ray character to Vince McMahon. He said that Vince was into that idea too, but couldn’t get past the name Bully due to WWE’s ‘Be a Star’ campaign:=
“For the first time in a long time, I got stopped in my tracks because you don’t expect Vince to acknowledge something that happened in another company. That kind of told me that whatever I did back then got back to him and that’s a good thing. So we had the Bully discussions, he couldn’t get around the word Bully because of the Be A Star program. I told Vince, ‘Here is how we’re going to work around it. Let’s do the Bully Ray thing for a year and at the end of the Bully Ray thing, story or run, that one babyface makes Bully understand the error of his ways and why you shouldn’t be a bully and now Bully Ray can do all the Be A Star stuff with the younger kids, saying I mended my ways. It was an in-the-ring and out-of-the-ring concept.’ He goes, ‘My god, I love it! It’s great. But in that year, I’m going to get killed by the media because how can you have an anti-bullying program but call somebody Bully Ray?’ Now they can have characters that act like bullies, but calling someone Bully something… That was 50 percent of it. The other 50 percent of it, I’ll save for another day. The back-up name was the Intimidator Bubba. He loved it but it never happened.”
