1. There Was A Secret Subliminal Lyric In The Brood's Theme
The Brood were a terrible, cringe-worthy faction.
History has revised this, because Edge and Christian subsequently forged legendary careers and Gangrel is such an endearing folk figure, but they were sh*te. They looked like Jumpin' Jeff Farmer in Seinfeld puffy shirts cutting promos. The careers of Edge and Christian weren't launched by the Brood but rather in spite of it; they got over as irreverent doofus types with patter.
It feels cruel to write, because Gangrel really does radiate sweetheart energy, and a lot of care and thought went into the stable. Gangrel has shoot fangs and was put on telly even though Vince McMahon doesn't like vampires.
It's a sh*t business.
The level of commitment wasn't merely physical; in a bid to develop a cult following, which was the aim, Gangrel in league with then in-house composer, the great Jim Johnston, apparently inserted subliminal backwards lyrics into the stable's entrance theme. "If you have the right skills and technology to play it backwards," Gangrel revealed in an interview with Chris Van Vliet, "it says 'I buried Paul, walk with me'."
Gangrel said that Johnston's love of the Beatles informed the 1980s-style moral panic tribute. There also appears to be a Twin Peaks reference there in addition to the Paul-is-dead myth.
