10 Shocking Heel Turns That Rocked WWE

1. Stone Cold & Mr. McMahon Join Forces

Nobody called Stone Cold selling out his anti-hero character and aligning with Mr. McMahon at WrestleMania X-Seven. It was unthinkable to imagine Steve Austin would shake hands with his arch nemesis just so he could leave The Reliant Astrodome in Houston, Texas with the WWF Title.

That's exactly what Austin did, and with that hand shake came the end of an era. The WWF couldn't really go backwards after this (even though they'd try); the fabled Austin vs. McMahon feud was over as soon as they locked hands. In one moment, the entire product changed to reflect this union.

It was a weird time to be a wrestling fan. Not only were Stone Cold and the WWF owner no longer at loggerheads, but WCW had been swallowed up by McMahon to boot. This was the final chapter in a rivalry that had clawed the WWF back to prominence at WCW's expense years earlier.

Austin would later admit regret over the heel turn, but it can't be denied that it shocked the world.
