10 Most Shocking Stone Cold Steve Austin Controversies

5. WCW Fires An Injured Austin

While it's often overlooked, Steve Austin's work for WCW in the early nineties is absolutely spectacular. WCW 89 - 94 had one of the best rosters of all time, with Sting, Austin, Foley, Flair, Muta, Vader, Steamboat, Rude, Pillman, and even a young Goldust all running up against each other and knocking it out of the park. While on tour in Japan, Austin tore his tricep which kept him out of action for a while. While the original story goes that Austin was fired via voicemail, Eric Bischoff's side of the story reveal a lot more about the infamous firing. Bischoff claims that even though Austin was injured, he still wanted him for TV. Tony Schivone called the Austin household and could hear him in the background tell his wife to say he wasn't home, and that led Bischoff to make the decision to let him go. When Eric Bischoff told this version of events on Stone Cold's podcast, Austin claimed to not remember the phone call, but he believes it did happen. Furthermore, he said that in hindsight, Bischoff made the right decision and he would have made the same call if their roles were reversed.
