10 Shocking Winners Of Wrestling Observer Awards

1. Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant at WrestleMania III - Worst Match Of The Year 1987

WrestleMania III - one of the most important wrestling events of all time - was sold almost exclusively on the blockbuster main event of Hulk Hogan versus Andre The Giant.

This was the first truly seismic WrestleMania ender; two of the industry's biggest stars going face-to-face with the real threat that Hogan's multi-year WWF Championship reign might finally end. It was an epic in every sense, but clearly that wasn't enough for some people.

In the shocker of all shockers, the Observer voted this match as the worst one of the entire year of 1987. You can see why this happened when you examine what won Best Match - Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat from the very same event.

Savage and Steamboat put on a technical masterclass, whilst Hogan vs Andre was more about crowd work and feats of strength. It's clear that the WON and its readers at the time were less interested in the more pantomime elements of wrestling and preferred some good ol' fashioned rasslin' instead.

Still, to call this match the worst of any year is totally undeserved and proof that those in the know don't always know as much as they think.
