10 Songs About Wrestling You Need To Hear
1. The Legend Of Chavo Guerrero - The Mountain Goats
In 2015 The Mountain Goats released the excellent wrestling theme concept album Beat the Champ. Primary Mountain Goat member John Darnielle grew up watching pro-wrestling during the territory day and the songs on the album deal with different events and wrestlers he would have seen in the 70s and 80s. Darnielle also uses his childhood love for wrestling to examine complex real-life issues.
"The Legend of Chavo Guerrero" specifically deals with Chavo Guerrero Sr. and name drops the different members of the Guerrero dynasty and his tag-team partner Al Madril.
Like many Mountain Goats tunes, the lyrics also explored Darnielle’s contentious relationship with his step-father. The lyric “He was my hero back when I was a kid/ You let me down but Chavo never once did,” compares Chavo to his step-father. As a child Chavo was the much-needed role model that was missing in his life. Pro-wrestling provided him with much needed escape.
The music video also features Chavo Sr, along with indie wrestlers Ray Rosas, Joey Ryan and Ryan Nemeth.
In 2018, The Mountain Goats released a new wrestling theme tune, "Song for Sasha Banks".
