3. Demolition Smash Becomes Repo Man

If ever there was an example in professional wrestling of someone being given the mouldiest lemons and making perfectly cromulent lemonade, this was it.

As part of Demolition Smash experienced great tag team success, with the duo reigning supreme with the longest WWF Tag Team Championship reign in history. When third member Crush was added the writing was on the wall however.

Smash would return soon after as Repo Man, the sneakiest of heels who repossessed things from people when they late on their payments. For some reason Repo Man was dressed like a low-rent Zorro, and had tire treads on his gear.

He also carried a tow rope to the ring, because obviously.

Repo Man was a gimmick designed to fail, but Smash (real name Barry Darsow) performed the persona with such commitment and glee that it kinda worked.

Darsow had worked as a repo man before getting into professional wrestling and the gimmick was his idea, so this one can't be planted on Vince McMahon and the creative team.

Repo Man lasted a couple of years before Darsow was released.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
