10 Stunning Displays Of WWE Arrogance

9. Believing Audience Would Swallow Lex Luger As Next Hulk Hogan

Arrogance doesn't always stop behind the scenes, sometimes it makes its way in front of the cameras too. Having experienced significant success with Hulk Hogan in the 1980's, Vince McMahon was eager to replicate that formula once Hogan packed his bags and left the promotion. In 1993, he put all his weight behind Lex Luger, a man he believed could be Hogan 2.0. This was a foolish move from the WWF, believing they could simply wheel out a watered down version of Hulk and the fans would buy it. A lot of money was spent hauling Luger across North America on the campaign trail. An expensive coach was also commissioned, dubbed the 'Lex Express'. There was a sense of desperation about the move, because it seemed the WWF were higher on Luger than fans were. It was an audacious move to expect people would lap up what was clearly a second rate idea. By 1993, fans wanted something a little different from the Hulk Hogan formula, not another wrestler simply thrust into the same role. This was arrogance from Vince McMahon, obviously feeling the fans would pay for anything he came up with.
