10 Stupidest Decisions By WWE In 2007

5. Needlessly Sacrificing CM Punk's Win Streak

CM Punk had a real hard time winning certain people over in WWE. His work was famously torn to pieces during his tryout match in the summer of 2005 when the likes of Shawn Michaels, Triple H and Arn Anderson labelled him with the 'doesn't know how to work' tag while watching it on a monitor backstage.

The Straight-Edge Superstar was sent to WWE developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he thrived under the tutelage of Paul Heyman. He was called up for the relaunched ECW - by request of Heyman - in the summer of '06 and quickly got over thanks to his refreshing character, unique style and look.

He was so over, in fact, that his name was chanted longer and harder than teammates The Hardy Boys, Triple H and Shawn Michaels at the Survivor Series pay-per-view. Punk amassed an impressive winning streak, failing to lose a singles or tag team match on television. Then, in January 2007, Punk's old enemy Arn Anderson decided that it was time Punk stared at the lights for someone.

That someone was Bob 'Hardcore' Holly, a respected veteran but not someone in a position to take away Punk's streak. According to The Enforcer, however, after fourteen years on WWE televsion, Holly was the 'bigger star'. No disrespect to Holly, who was a hardworking talent and deserved better than what he got, but Punk was on the up while he was on the down and wouldn't even compete at that year's WrestleMania.

Rumour has it that Punk was in the doghouse for disagreeing with the match layout for the disastrous Extreme Elimination Chamber at the perfectly rotten ECW December to Dismember pay-per-view and that this was his punishment. A month or so after the pointless loss to Holly, Punk was back in line for a significant push.

Talk about counterproductive...
