10 Stupidest Reasons Wrestlers Turned Heel
6. Sting - Telling The Truth
Throughout WCW's chaotic booking in the '90s, there was one constant: Sting. Company fans knew they could always root for the valiant babyface, even when he turned into a mysterious, shadowy figure stalking the nWo. Sting was the archetypal good guy, and it seemed impossible that WCW would ever try to turn him heel.
In 1999, presumably motivated by a growing need to swerve, swerve, swerve, Sting turned on Hulk Hogan and also started battering referees when things didn't go his own way. He explained his actions by claiming Hogan couldn't be trusted, which... well, everyone who had watched the product agreed with.
Yep, WCW tried to convince fans that Sting was worth booing by having him tell the truth. They even ran a video package that tried to colour all of his previous feuds (against top heels like Ric Flair, the nWo and more) as selfish acts from a guy who didn't really care about the fans.
It didn't work. Fans refused to boo someone who only worried about Hulk's motives for returning to the red and yellow.
