7. Jeff Jarrett Rolls Back The Years...
Jeff Jarrett absolutely f*cked himself when he returned to WWE in 1997 with a scathing promo directed at a red hot roster that had mostly done fine without him.
Steve Austin was at the centre of his vitriol (and this wouldn't serve him well years later either), but the gimmick of being both a traditionalist and better than the newer faces on the roster felt dated enough before he was dressed like an aztec and saddled with the National Wrestling Alliance stable as back-up.
Alas, at least joining a nothing stable earned him a nothing strap. Becoming NWA North American Heavyweight Champion by virtue of a victory over Barry Windham (who'd later join the group anyway), Jarrett was a star in his own mind and out of everybody else's way. It was thankfully all binned off in relatively short order as 'Double J' and WWE had a bit of a rethink, but not before...
