10 Surprising Failures As WWE Champion

3. Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho was one of the most underutilised assets of WCW. When he jumped to the WWF in late 1999, it was immediately obvious that he'd be a championship contender at some point. After all, it isn't every day a new wrestler debuts in a segment with The Rock. The potential for Jericho as Champion was huge. He was fantastic both in the ring and on the microphone. Added to this, he was a great shifter of merchandise. WWF got behind Jericho in the December of 2001, when he won both the WWF Title and WCW Title to form the Undisputed Championship. That should have been a career maker, as he had defeated both The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin in the same night, to become the first ever Undisputed Champion. But Jericho's big run was a failure. A large part of that can be attributed to WWE creative, who ended up relegating his role to a bit part player in the larger Triple H / Stephanie McMahon feud. It was as if Jericho was just Stephanie's valet in her more important feud with Triple H. That sort of booking was a killer to Jericho's hopes of making a name for himself as the top guy. His run was forgettable and had no great matches, ultimately ending in one of the dullest Mania main events ever, when he jobbed the belt to Triple H at WrestleMania X8. WWE never trusted him with the WWE Title again, although he did get runs with the World Title in a career renaissance many years later.
