10 Terrible Wrestling Matches (That Should Have Been Great)
4. Sting vs. Hollywood Hogan (WCW Starrcade 1997)
Eric Bischoff deserves maximum respect for refusing to cave in to pressure and throw Sting's challenge to Hollywood Hogan's nWo dominance out there before Starrcade 1997. It would have been easy for Bischoff to book WCW's biggest money match at The Great American Bash, for example, because that show didn't have a World Title match.
WCW stood firm, and the stage was set for Sting vs. Hogan to blow the roof off Washington's MCI Center. Then, Sting just sort of meandered down the aisle after a year of descending from the rafters, looked like every other wrestler on the roster and was pasted for a good 12 minutes by the man who'd previously been terrified of him. When WCW then booked Bret Hart to stick his nose in (following a foolish tribute to the previous month's 'Montreal Screwjob' in the WWF, which followed peak Hogan politicking in the form of a visual win) and stop the nWo injustice, the big moment was officially spoiled.
Sting's eventual title win was sullied by a confusing match layout and lame finish.
