10 Terrifying Wrestling Moments That Still Scare Adults

2. Mae Young Gets Sent To Hell

There's a perverse amusement involved, because of course there is.

This infamous spot functions as a wonderful, blackly funny sight gag, for Bubba Ray Dudley powerbombed a folk hero octogenarian off the stage and through a table. In a further, expert layer of unconscionable cruelty, Mae Young was wearing a neck brace and had to rely on a wheelchair in the fiction.

But, even equipped with the knowledge that Mae was completely fine afterwards, and was always going to be, since she is tougher than most half her age, watching it back now remains a distressing experience even if it was played with such over-the-top ham. It's a quintessentially Attitude Era moment - how far could this deranged stunt show go?

There's a moment in the arc of the bump - which Bubba performed so perfectly, incidentally - in which it looks like Mae is going to take the impact right on her neck, a body part that, as we have been tragically informed too often, doesn't much care for the limits of human resolve. It was a demented risk to take, or at least, it still feels that way. It illustrates the power of wrestling's worked magic.

How did she not crumble into dust?
