10 Things 2015 In Wrestling Will Be Remembered For
10. WWE Try To Change Perception Of Divas
When WWE started referring to their female performers as 'Divas' many moons ago, the connotation was perfectly clear. The company wanted people to view the women under contract as stars that existed above and beyond merely being known as lady wrestlers. For years, the phrase which accompanied the Divas was, "Smart, Sexy, Powerful". 2015 marked the point when WWE decided to try and shift that perception a little bit. At the start of the year, there were grumblings on social media from the likes of AJ Lee and Paige. These women were clearly unhappy with how they were being presented on television. Short match times and a lack of actual storylines were the main sources of frustration. WWE tried to do something different that Summer. NXT Divas who had been earning acclaim were called up from development. Names like Charlotte and Sasha Banks were now on the main roster, and they formed separate groups on the July 13 episode of Monday Night Raw. Charlotte created Team PCB with Becky Lynch and Paige, whereas Banks formed Team B.A.D with Naomi and Tamina. The idea hasn't really panned out, but at least there was a concerted effort to provoke change.
