10 Things Fans Hate About WWE That Will Never Change
9. The Soap Opera
Wrestling has always been heavily dramatised. The sport’s obviously built around excellent matches, but those matches don’t mean much without believable characters and a strong storyline. The personalities, circumstances, and implications are what keep us hooked, and without them, wrestling would’ve never broken into mainstream culture.
There’s a strong argument to be made that WWE have swung too far away from wrestling as a sport, however, and that sports entertainment has turned Raw & SmackDown into a glorified talk show. The pantomime has overcome the competition, talking segments have become more important than matches, and WWE are now veering dangerously close to the cartoonish product that almost put them out of business in the 1990s.
It’s a solid argument, but while fans would love to see great technical wrestlers like Cesaro pushed in Roman Reigns’ place, it’s not going to happen. WWE have done all they can to distance themselves from traditional wrestling over the past couple of decades. The McMahon family have made it clear that they see their company as a multi-faceted entertainment provider, and not a sports organisation. No matter how hard we push, WWE will continue promoting the soap opera aspect over everything else, even as ratings hit record lows.
