10 Things Learned From William Regal On talkSPORT

9. US Characters Based On 'Carry On' Films

A huge fan of comedy growing up in England, the future comedic Commissioner of WWE was interested in becoming a comedian as a child, but quickly realised that there was a brilliant opportunity to marry his two passions into one upon hitting it big in America. Throughout every run Regal has had on US soil, whether that be with WCW or WWE, each character has been explicitly designed with British sensibilities in mind. One example would be the tremendously arrogant 'Lord' Steven Regal which played out on WCW screens in the mid-90's. Such an overt stereotype may not exist in real life Britain, but it summed up exactly what North Americans thought when picturing a wrestler from the United Kingdom. Conceded, posh and even a little twee and camp, the British blueblood schtick was incredibly over as a heel - fans despised the snobby Regal, who is really anything but away from the wrestling industry.
