10 Things New Japan Does Better Than WWE
8. Finishes To Matches
A subtle difference but one that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the good folk of wrestling subreddits.
John Cena has drawn the ire of ‘smart’ fans through his consistent use of the ‘five moves of doom’ to end his matches after having just received a ton of punishment. Outside of him most of WWE’s contests end with a series of finishers and reversals, reversals and finishers, but New Japan is noted for relying on a more realistic technique for match endings.
Take for instance the Naito/Omega instant classic from the end of this year’s G1. Once Omega had caught Naito with that peach of a jumping knee, he went straight for his signature move and when Naito kicked out he did not hesitate. He didn’t revel in the shock that his opponent had kicked out at two, rather he got straight back up and went for another move, and again and again until Naito stayed down. At no point did Naito look like he could get in that fiery comeback because Kenny didn’t allow him the time to do so, and when you think about it, why would he? If you have an advantage in a fight you cling on with everything you have to keep it.
Too often do we see WWE wrestlers hit their finisher then stop to consider their life choices. It takes away the urgency and desperation that you would imagine someone in a real altercation would be feeling and once you notice the difference, it’s clear which promotion has the better idea.
