Truly clean finishes are rarely seen beasts in WWE. The desperate desire to keep everyone strong means excuses must always been made for losses. The biggest wrestling promotion on the planet has lost sight of the importance of straight competition, and it no longer believes that you can lose to a better competitor and still be seen as a credible force.

Not so in NXT. TakeOver: Philadelphia featured five matches of varying importance, and all five ended with clean finishes. None of the losers looked bad in defeat, and all of the winners gained something. The champions retained their titles through tactics, strategy and ability, as opposed to someone’s music playing and distracting the challenger.

Maybe it is because WWE is so repulsed by the idea of matches ending clean, but NXT continues to be a breath of fresh air in this regard.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
