10 Things That Are No Longer Special About WWE Royal Rumble

8. Temporary Alliances

As one of WWE’s favorite clichés goes, “it’s every person for themselves” in the Royal Rumble match.

While there may be only one prize at the end of each annual battle royal, there are brief moments when wrestlers team up to position themselves further ahead in the contest. Of course, such alliances are merely temporary.

In 2020, Edge made a surprise return to WWE when he entered the Rumble alongside his former friend and rival, Randy Orton. It had been years since fans saw Team Rated RKO in action, and it received a tremendous pop. Like so many other unions, though, it was only a matter of time before the two stars turned on each other.

The combination of certain wrestlers can create a memory, but it is also an act that can quickly become boring. Once you’ve watched a couple of teamwork instances in the match, you know the partnerships never last. It’s all by the numbers now. Two or more performers team up to take out a few other competitors before inevitably imploding and costing either one or all of them their WrestleMania opportunities.

As with the ‘The Viper’ and ‘Rated R Superstar,’ some of these betrayals can lead to popular feuds, whereas others can be more like two behemoths clobbering each other out of stupidity, as seen in 2015. Whatever the case, it’s almost a guarantee that fans will see similar truces (and turns) in future Royal Rumbles.
