10 Things That Prove December Is The Worst Month For Wrestling
9. No Major New Japan Show
In recent years, New Japan Pro Wrestling has become the #2 promotion in the world. It was already the sport's leader in Japan, but thanks to the Internet, it's picked up footing around the globe.
Part of what makes NJPW so successful outside of Japan is that it's not simply another attempt at doing WWE-style wrestling. It - like most Japanese wrestling - is very sports-oriented, and thus it feels like a true alternative to WWE's product for English-speaking fans.
New Japan's major shows are almost always winners, but unfortunately, there's no such show in December. October has King of Pro Wrestling, November has Power Struggle, and January 4 boasts the top event of the entire year in Wrestle Kingdom, but there's no major show in December.
December does, in fairness, host the World Tag League tournament (as well as the tournament finals, which accounts for the month's biggest show), but it's usually one of the more missable events on the NJPW calendar. Though the Tag League matches are fun, it's not like this is the G1, Best of the Super Juniors, or New Japan Cup.
Even trying to check out something besides WWE doesn't pay off too well in December.
