10 Things We Learned From Bruce Prichard’s Creation Of WWE Raw Podcast

5. Vince McMahon Was Obsessed By ‘Topical’ Commentary

Another of Vince's wacky ideas was to incorporate more current events into the commentary on Raw. This wouldn't bleed over into other shows, partly because it didn't fit (imagine that) and also because it'd help make Raw unique. McMahon firmly believed recanting news headlines would prove that Raw was beaming live.

Bruce hated this, and he despised sitting down with Vince and a copy of USA Today even more. One of Prichard's tasks at early episodes of Raw was to ensure that McMahon didn't forget to talk about topical news items on commentary. Often, Bruce "forgot" on purpose, because he felt it didn't add anything to the show.

This explains why Rob Bartlett performed that cringeworthy Mike Tyson comedy skit on the first episode. We've got Vince McMahon to thank for that, and we doubt many wrestling fans feel like thanking him. Forcing in news headlines for the sake of it and trying to tie them in with WWF storylines was never going to work.
