10 Things We Learned From Bruce Prichard’s Randy Savage Podcast

7. The Mega Powers Break Up Was Considered A Disaster

The entire storyline orchestrated around The Mega Powers union and eventual split was perfectly handled between 1988-1989. On The Main Event in February, '89, Savage and Hulk Hogan came to blows when Hulk abandoned Randy during a tag match and took an injured Elizabeth backstage. The live break up scene everyone remembers? It was considered a disaster.

On camera, Hogan asked for a time cue and Savage was legit fired up about Liz's safety. Notoriously paranoid, the Macho Man was getting hot and told Bruce Prichard he planned to 'lay it in' when the backstage brawl happened. Only exacerbating the situation, NBC chief Dick Ebersol also pulled Brutus Beefcake from the scene when the wrestler tried to intervene earlier than planned.

Overall, Prichard thought the production was crappy and blamed Ebersol for the segment's lack of polish. Vince McMahon wasn't bothered though, and believed nobody would have heard Hulk's out-of-character question at the time. McMahon also didn't have a problem with Savage clubbing Hogan for real with the title.
